Case Study 1  - Staff Nurse with an Employment Dispute
​

Jane Jones who is a staff nurse and works for a Mental Health Trust, raises concerns to the Ward Manager about her colleague Sian who slaps a patient who has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act. The Ward Manager, John takes no action. A few days later, Sian tells John that Jane has been leaving her shift early and stealing money from petty cash. Jane is suspended for three months and NHS Counter-fraud are involved. NHS Counter-fraud take six months to investigate and then Jane is called to a disciplinary hearing at the Trust's headquarters. Jane is told that if the allegations are proven she will be dismissed and referred to the NMC.

​Case Study 2  - Staff Nurse dealing with a patient complaint and raising a grievance
​

Arvin Santos is a staff nurse and works for a large NHS Trust, There is a complaint by a patient stating that a young male nurse had been rude to him and the ward manager decides to investigate. The other two male staff nurses Ben and Jerry tell the ward manager that the complaint is definitely about Arvin because he comes across as rude. Arvin does not recall having much contact with the patient on the ward who was a new patient. He is worried that Ben and Jerry are deliberately pointing the finger at him. He has heard Jerry make a comment that "Phiippino nurses are all useless"

Case Study 3  - Referral to the NMC and defending the charges
​

Anya Williams is a staff nurse at an NHS Trust in the gynaecological unit. She arrives at work at 8am on a Friday morning to be approached by someone from HR who hands her a letter stating that she is suspended on full pay following allegations of slapping a patient. The following day Anya receives a letter from the Nursing and Midwifery Council to state that there is an urgent interim hearing in a week to establish if she should be suspended from practice pending a hearing. Anya's husband Bill has long term ill health and she is the main bread winner. ​
